Waste Pesticide Collection

Hennepin County will be holding a Waste Pesticide Collection on Monday, June 2, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. The collection site will be located at South Hennepin Recycling and Problem Waste Drop-Off Center, 1400 West 96th Street, Bloomington.

This collection is similar to the Waste Pesticide Collections that the Minnesota Department of Agriculture has held in the past. The only change is that participants must have a county business address or be a resident of Anoka, Carver, Hennepin, Ramsey or Scott counties.

The collection is open to farmers, commercial applicators, non-commercial applicators and structural pest control applicators. Pesticide retailers and distributors are not qualified participants. Each participant is allowed to bring in a maximum of 300 pounds of waste pesticide.

Households wanting to dispose of waste pesticides should use the Bloomington Facility, Tuesday through Saturday during normal facility hours. Households bringing in pesticides during this collection will be turned away.

Participants need to pre-register the Waste Pesticides that they will be bringing to the collection. Waste Pesticide Registration forms are available by calling (612) 348-3777 or on the Hennepin County web site keyword search: Waste pesticide collection. Complete the forms and return them to the address on the top of the form.

The program will also not accept non-pesticide products such as surfactants, crop oils, adjuvants, tank cleaners, dye markers and empty pesticide containers. Waste pesticides are the only products participants will be allowed to drop off.

Low Voltage Changes Affect Unlicensed Contractors

Are you installing, altering, repairing, planning or laying out landscape irrigation or lighting without a power limited technician (PLT) on staff? Changes passed by the Minnesota Legislature will impact you!

(1) New enforcement language will allow electrical inspectors to issue "administrative orders" (essentially a ticket with monetary penalty) on the spot if you are found to be operating outside of the law. The administrative order system replaces a cumbersome court process that slowed some enforcement actions in the past.

For more information go to: http://www.electricity.state.mn.us/Elec_lic/Pers_lic/Pl_form/index.html. Ongoing updates can be found at http//www.mnpowerlimited.com/window.htm.

Another change to the law will expand the number of continuing education hours required to maintain the PLT license from 8 to 16 over a two-year period. The Department of Labor & Industry pushed for this change to align requirements with other licenses. The full bill as amended and passed can be viewed under House File1208.

Member Communication

The MTGF newsletter, Clippings, is published semiannually in the spring and fall. This newsletter is intended to inform all MTGF members of the latest turf and grounds research being conducted at the University. It is also a means of getting information out to the membership about important happenings within the Foundation as well as the other allied associations. In fact, allied associations are encouraged to utilize this newsletter to announce their upcoming events, educational meetings and other topics of interest to the turf and grounds industry.
